EMOTA lunch debate on “Online Marketplaces: A Gateway to Global Sales”
On 26 June 2018, EMOTA held a lunch debate in the European Parliament entitled “Online Marketplaces: A Gateway to Global Sales”. The event hosted by MEP Dita Charanzová, Vice-Chair of the IMCO Committee, aimed to explore and discuss the relations between marketplaces and webshops: Samuel Laurinkari, Head of EU affairs at eBay, who presented the perspective of online marketplaces. Andrea Gönner, Managing Director of Garnwelt, a German webshop selling high quality, branded wool; and James Sibley, Deputy Head of EU Affairs of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) described how online marketplaces can help small businesses to tap into new markets and to attract new customers worldwide. MEP Dita Charanzová welcomed the engagement of marketplaces and businesses in the debate and concluded that the Commission’s proposal on ‘Fairness in platform-to-business relations’ should be easy, simple and encourage a balance between businesses, marketplaces and consumers.
