EMOTA Luncheon Debate on "Product Safety - A 21st Century Approach"
On 4 September 2018, EMOTA held a luncheon debate in the European Parliament exploring the solutions and efforts to achieve a more targeted and efficient approach to product safety in the EU. The event was hosted by MEP Jasenko Selimović (ALDE Group) and speakers included James Waterworth (Amazon), Ioana Zlotila (PROSAFE) and Kevin Rodler (Thomann). The participants raised various issues, such as the need to focus on high-risk products (e.g. books vs electronic equipment) to ensure the safety of consumers, the lack of resources and reliable data. Despite divergent views on the Parliament’s position adopted the previous day, there was a general agreement that consumer trust and safety need to be ensured in the wake of the exponential growth of eCommerce from third countries, and that clear and harmonised rules across the EU would be beneficial.
